Ways for volunteers to support HPCG PDF Print E-mail

Direct Patient Care - Training Required
HPCG patient/family volunteers attend our basic orientation and training classes.

Ways to help:

• Visit with patient/family on a regular basis for companionship and emotional support.
• Stay with patient for short periods of time to provide respite for caregivers.
• Run errands or provide transportation.
• At the Palliative Care Unit at Moses H. Cone Hospital, or at Beacon Place on the HPCG campus, our volunteers serve the needs of “the house” and may visit several different patients during a shift.
• Volunteers may remain in touch with family members after the death of their loved ones, during the early stages of bereavement.

HPCG direct patient care volunteers may visit with patients at home, in the hospital, or in a Greensboro long-term-care facility.

Kids Path Program Support - Training Required
Kids Path volunteers receive our basic orientation and training classes, plus additional KP training that addresses family dynamics when a child has a life-threatening illness or condition, and how children respond to grief and loss.

Ways to help:

• Visit and provide support for children with a life-threatening condition or those affected by a loved one’s illness (such as a sibling)
• Run errands and provide respite to caregivers.
• Help organize activities and give one-on-one time to children in bereavement support groups or at special events..
• Help with “Champ Camp,” Kids Path’s annual camp for grieving children.
• Help with our Aarvy Aardvark Puppet shows- troupe our puppet show on grief and loss for 3rd graders in Greensboro. Our show teaches children how to be supportive when losses occur. (Puppeteers do not need the additional KP training.)

Group Volunteer Opportunities for HPCG
Following are some suggestions based on successful past projects. However, our needs vary and change. We welcome your ideas for ways your group would like to be of service to HPCG.

Ways to help:

• Tend gardens and grounds around our campus to promote a year-round atmosphere of serenity and natural beauty for visitors and residents.
• Host a special occasion at Beacon Place such as an ice cream social, cookout, or cookies and punch.
• Prepare home-cooked meals for homecare families, families at Beacon Place, and families at the Palliative Care Unit at Moses H. Cone Hospital. Often families spend long hours with their loved ones and a home-cooked meal helps them through a difficult period.
• Holidays such as Yom Kippur, Christmas, Hanukkah, or Thanksgiving are made special by an individual or a group willing to provide food, decorations, or gifts.
